What Can Power Chicks Teach You?

marketing-shebang-power-chicksSince launching Power Chicks on Biznik last month, membership has rocketed to nearly 250 women across America. Curious, I’ve been pondering the secret to its success – and realized the same principles I use with clients are working with our group.

Here (drum roll, please) are 2 tips from the Power Chicks to get your business booming:

Tap into a Need

The Power Chicks group connects women whose businesses serve other women. Our mission is to collaborate and support one another both online and by getting together in coffee shops, over happy-hour drinks and with workshops where we learn to build our businesses.

With its phenomenal growth, it clearly taps into a need – one echoed by member Nancy Juetten of Main Street Media Savvy:

“One of the reasons this group appeals to me is that the isolation of working from a home office can be very challenging. Connecting with other like-minded business women in an authentic, personal way would add a lot of value to my life and business. Learning from others to help my business grow in new ways would be a plus.”

Lesson:  Always aim to meet or create a need with your products or services.

Name with care – and flair!

I named the group “Power Chicks” because, well, I liked the way it rolled off my tongue: just two lickety-split words.

On retrospect, I realize good marketing mojo was at work. Not only is the name snappy, it’s aspirational – marketing-speak for something we aspire to. After all, who doesn’t want to be a Power Chick? (Guys, maybe, but that’s beside the point.) The name calls to mind strength, passion, forthrightness and gustiness.

Whereas “Women Who Own Businesses” just – doesn’t.

Lesson: Have a little fun when naming your products and services (but still be clear).
